BIBLICAL FINANCIAL PRINCIPLES
A survey of scriptural teaching about money and wealth
course format
Overview: The course is a series of slide presentations, referred to as "modules".
Format: The heart of this seminar is a ten-module set of downloadable pdf files created with Microsoft PowerPoint. These 10 modules are collectively referred to in this website as “10 Biblical Principles about Money and Wealth”. Though what the Bible says about this subject could be organized and presented in many different ways, the author has consolidated his understanding of basic scriptural teaching about finances into ten principles. Four broad-brush life applications, as well as a few more specific ones, have been added to the ten principles to provide context and practical outcomes to the basic teaching . These presentations are found on the Course pages (Short, Basic, and Formal), and are presented in various lengths to accommodate class time constraints as well as differing student learning objectives. Ten biblical financial principles regarding money and wealth:PRINCIPLE 1. God owns everything and we are His stewardsPRINCIPLE 2. Worship and trust God rather than moneyPRINCIPLE 3. Additional modules: Added to the core modules are application modules suitable for developing a biblical perspective on money and wealth as it applies to the family, business, the local church, and society. MODULE IV. Money and the FamilyMODULE V. Money and the ChurchMODULE VI. Money and Business MODULE VII. Money and Society
Delivery options: This website presents three ways this course may be presented, all using a pdf version of a Power Point format; other delivery formats are possible based on the creativity of the presenter: 1) Short Course: a high-level, 2-4 hr lecture presenting an overview of Scriptural teaching on money and wealth. 2) Basic Course: a more in-depth biblical study organized into ten core modules. Each module examines one of the 10 basic principles concerning money and wealth. The Basic Course can be presented as a 13-week (~1 hr each) curriculum for a college/adult SS class, a weekend church conference, a 2-day seminar (eg, to the senior class at a Christian academy), or as part of an enriched curriculum at a Bible college. 3) Formal course: This is a more comprehensive study requiring 25-30 hours of class-room instruction with an accompanying student syllabus. The full course includes a Scriptural survey and inductive study so that the student can begin formulating his own understanding of the subject, the 10 basic principles, quizzes, class essays and discussions, and a two-hour final examination. Added to the core modules are sessions with practical applications for the family, business, the local church, and society. This course has been taught many times since 2007 at the Trinity College and Seminary in Sielmat, Manipur, India.
Adaptability: The author acknowledges that this course represents his personal understanding of Scriptural teaching on the subject. Therefore, though it tries to be faithful to the Bible, there is room for disagreement by other students of God's Word. However, the source material can be adapted for teaching according to other biblical interpretations and among other cultures and demographics. If you wish to adapt any of these courses to your target audience, please contact the author.
History: These courses were originally designed for presentation at various venues in India, including the Trinity College and Seminary in Sielmat, Manipur, India. They have since been presented in the United States, with appropriate cultural adaptations.
Student handouts: On the Student Handout page, links are provided to student handouts containing outlines of each module. These pdf handouts can be downloaded and printed for each student. When presenting the complete course, the instructor can download a student supplemental handout which provides a survey of course effectiveness, a student scorecard for class participation, and a worksheet for inductive study by the student working together as a member of a team. The presenter is encouraged to develop his own final examination if one is desired.
